You Can Help
Make a donation
What your money can do
100% of your donation to Firelight will go towards
funding grassroots organizations and supporting the needs of children
affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Dollars given at the community level
go a long way to make a difference:
- For less than $100, you can provide tuition, a uniform, and
books for an elementary school student.
- $225 funds a workshop on HIV/AIDS prevention for 55 youth,
who then act as peer educators, raising awareness in their communities.
- $500 provides start-up capital via a rotating fund to several
families as they undertake small business ventures to improve
their economic security as caregivers.
- $1,000 supports the annual salary of a community coordinator
of outreach activities to children affected by HIV/AIDS.
- $5,000 to $10,000 provides a year of operating support to many
of Firelight’s volunteer-led organizations.
Other ways that you can make a difference
- Educate yourself
Released in July 2002, a joint UNICEF, UNAIDS, and USAID publication,
Children
on the Brink, offers an excellent overview of the situation
of children affected by HIV/AIDS. The report is also available
by contacting TvT Associates at (202) 842-2939.
- Educate your family & friends
Invite a few people over for dinner and discussion of the African
situation. Distribute a Fact
Sheet available from UNICEF online.
- Act
Show your support for an organization doing effective work to
address the pandemic and its consequences by giving of your time,
talents, or expertise.
- Advocate
Write a letter to your Senator or Congressperson encouraging him/her
to press harder for increased US funding to the Global Fund to
Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. (To date, the US has promised
$500 million, but has only contributed $200 million. The US has
been asked to give 0.7% of its gross national product, or GNP,
which equals close to $1.5 billion, roughly $5 per American.)
