Shared Principles on Serving Children
Firelight Foundation supports these shared principles behind efforts to serve children:

  • The Convention on the Rights of the Child
    The Convention on the Rights of the Child "spells out the basic human rights to which children everywhere are entitled: the right to survival; the right to the development of their full physical and mental potential; the right to protection from influences that are harmful to their development; and the right to participation in family, cultural and social life." Adopted by the United Nations in 1989, the Convention is an international human rights treaty ratified by all but two countries worldwide.

  • Principles to Guide Programming for Orphans and Other Children Affected by HIV/AIDS
    This document provides counsel to guide local, regional, national, and international initiatives for children affected by HIV/AIDS. It was produced by the Informal Donors Technical Group on Orphans and Vulnerable Children. The principles were defined after discussions among national and international stakeholders at the July 2000 XIII International AIDS Conference in Durban and follow-up workshops.

  • Children on the Brink
    This USAID report, first issued in 1997 and is updated every two years with the most recent completed in 2004, was the seminal study to raise awareness of the needs of AIDS orphans. It tells the story of children affected by HIV/AIDS and provides core recommendations on addressing the global crisis. The website provides an executive summary of the July 2000 update.

  • Africa's Orphaned Generations
    This UNICEF 2003 publication discusses the scale of the orphan crisis in Africa; the impact it has on families, households, communities and orphans themselves; and also outlines the support needed to take care of these children.

African Grantmakers and Organizations Supporting Vulnerable Children

  • African Grantmakers Affinity Group (AGAG)
    AGAG is a network of grantmakers interested in working in Africa. Its purpose is to foster greater foundation interest and more effective grantmaking in Africa. AGAG's website provides information on membership and upcoming events.

  • AFXB: Association François-Xavier Bagnoud
    AFXB is involved in 17 initiatives in 13 countries involving children's rights, health and human rights, and pediatric HIV/AIDS. Its website includes news and program information specific to AIDS orphans. Its website also includes the AIDS Orphans Assistance Database (AOAD). AOAD is an online database of organizations and individuals assisting children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS and their caregivers. Users can search the database by region or enter their own program information.

  • American Jewish World Service
    American Jewish World Service provides financial support, technical assistance, skilled volunteers, and emergency relief to grassroots organizations worldwide to alleviate poverty, hunger, and disease. Its website provides background, grant application guidelines, and details on the HIV/AIDS projects it has funded.

  • Bernard van Leer Foundation
    The Bernard van Leer Foundation (BvLF) is a private foundation created in 1949 that is based in the Netherlands and operates internationally. The mission of the BvLF is to enhance opportunities for children growing up in circumstances of social and economic disadvantage. The Foundation is concerned with young children's overall development, with special emphasis on children birth to 8 years. The Foundation therefore promotes a holistic approach including education, health and nutrition. BvLF works in the following African countries: Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

  • The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
    The Foundation is a worldwide non-profit organization dedicated to identifying, funding, and conducting research on pediatric HIV/AIDS and other serious and life-threatening diseases facing children. Its website includes research project descriptions and grant application information, and it allows for online donations. Its website also includes information on the Call to Action Project, a Foundation project to help reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV in the developing world.

  • Global Strategies for HIV Prevention
    Global Strategies implements international strategies to prevent HIV infection, using strategic alliances and organizing international meetings. Its website provides information on its campaign to prevent HIV transmission to newborns, program reports, and upcoming conference information.

  • Hope for Africa Children Initiative (HACI)
    The Hope for Africa Children Initiative (HACI) is a partnership of CARE, Plan International, the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa, and the World Conference on Religion and Peace. Click here to learn more about HACI, and its partner organizations.

  • NetAid
    NetAid raises and distributes funds for selected local development projects worldwide, using the Internet as its key tool. Its website allows users to donate to and learn about specific projects, and provides information and stories about issues of poverty.

  • Plan and Childreach
    Childreach is the U.S. member of Plan, a global child-centered development organization helping needy children and their families in developing countries. Its website offers program information and allows for online donations.

  • The Synergy Project
    The Synergy Project provides resource on program management and policy development for organizations fighting HIV/AIDS worldwide. Its website compiles comprehensive reports and data on HIV/AIDS, best practices, policies, and program design, as well as the Children Affected by HIV/AIDS (CABA) online/email discussion forum.

    This website provides a Pulitzer Prize-winning news series by Mark Schoofs on the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Originally published November to December 1999.

  • AIDS in Africa, PBS Online NewsHour
    This website provides news and data on AIDS in Africa, based on PBS health news coverage. Updated July 2001.

  • Health and Human Rights: The State of the World's Children 2003
    UNICEF's 2003 edition of The State of the World's Children focuses on child participation and the importance of taking the opinions of children and youth into account when decisions are being made that affect them. The report, available in PDF format as well as a text-only version, includes examples of meaningful child participation from every region of the world. Statistical tables include indices from all countries and territories with particular reference to children's health and well being.

  • HIV InSite, Sub-Saharan Africa
    This website provides data and analysis on the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. Updated December 2001.

  • Human Rights Watch
    Human Rights Watch works to protect the rights of people around the world. Its website provides news, publications, and country-specific information on human rights issues.

  • PANDEMIC: Facing AIDS
    PANDEMIC: Facing AIDS is a feature-length film produced by Rory Kennedy of Moxie Firecracker Films. This moving documentary aims to capture the humanitarian crisis at the core of the global pandemic through the life stories of individuals on five continents. By capturing their experiences and conveying the personal significance of living with HIV/AIDS, the film has great potential to raise awareness and catalyze a response. This website contains links to a variety of organizations and resources, and additional ideas about how to take action.

  • UNAIDS: Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS
    UNAIDS is an advocate for global action on HIV/AIDS. Its website provides current statistics, global news, and information on international activities against HIV/AIDS.
