Our Team

Kerry Olson, Founder and President
Kerry Olson serves as president of Firelight's Board of Directors and plays an active role in the Foundation's strategic planning, advocacy, and outreach. She founded Firelight in 1999 with her husband, David Katz, a Silicon Valley software engineer.

In 2007, Kerry and David were recognized by Geneva Global and Barron's Magazine as being among ten philanthropists nationwide whose foundations "epitomized thoughtful and effective giving."

Kerry engages in public speaking, writing, and the building of strategic partnerships to promote best practice in international philanthropy and child-focused grantmaking. She is co-author of The Promise of a Future and From Faith to Actiontwo widely-endorsed publications promoting donor investment in grassroots programs that work to strengthen family and community care for children. She chairs the Better Care Network Faith-Based Organization Outreach Committee and serves on the steering committees of the Family Care Alliance and the Interagency Learning Initiative on Engaging with Communities to Support Child Wellbeing. Kerry also serves on the Advisory Board of the Global Action for Children.

Prior to Firelight, Kerry worked for more than 20 years in the non-profit sector as an educator, the founding director of child/parent community centers, and as a research social scientist for SRI International. She has a Ph.D. in developmental psychology and education from The University of Michigan.
