Announcing Joshua Kyallo as Firelight’s Managing Director


joshpicAs Firelight continues its stated commitment to expand its staff and leadership in Africa and as we continue to refine our future strategy to support African community-based organizations that are impacting children’s lives, we are incredibly pleased to announce the appointment of Joshua Kyallo as Firelight’s Managing Director. Joshua is a Kenyan-born international development specialist with 25 years' experience providing strategic, program, fundraising and people management leadership to international organizations in Africa and the USA.

 Joshua has over 25 years of experience in leading the design, development and implementation of complex, multimillion dollar programs across Africa for 7 international NGOs based in USA and Africa. He has decades of experience in providing programmatic oversight and leading overseas programs and international staff at country and regional level. His expertise ranges across adolescent sexual and reproductive health, reproductive health and contraception, community-based health care, civil society empowerment, HIVAIDS, maternal and child health, entrepreneurship, capacity building, health education, gender-based violence, malaria, water, sanitation, non-communicable diseases, public-private partnerships, policy and advocacy.

Joshua began his career as a Program Manager and Health & Education Program Coordinator for CARE International in Kenya. He then spent time as Program Manager and acting Country Representative for theAgency for Co-operation and Research in Development (ACORD/UK) in Somalia, before spending over six years with Save the Children UK in Tanzania. He was country Program Director for Partners for Development (PFD/USA) in Nigeria for two years before taking over as Country Director for AMREF Health Africa in Uganda for over seven years. More recently he was Director of Africa Programs for the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, before becoming President and CEO of Universal Technology Outreach Community Hubs (U-TOUCH).

As Managing Director, Joshua will lead Firelight’s operations and initiatives in Africa and will be responsible for ensuring the strategic and impactful design, delivery, quality control and evaluation of Firelight’s programs, activities, and portfolio of grants. As Firelight continues to transition its leadership to Africa, Joshua will expand and manage our incredible team of program staff on the continent. He will also be a critical member of Firelight’s strategy development team. Joshua will be based in Africa starting October 2016.

Joshua brings many years of child-centered programming, strategic planning, systems thinking and people management leadership to Firelight, along with impressive experience in organizational change management, program growth, and revenue generation. As Firelight enters a period of strategic consolidation, growth and impact in Africa, we are looking forward to Joshua’s leadership as we deepen our mission to empower African communities to create lasting change for children and youth.
