As Operations Officer, Shannon works closely with the Program Team and Finance and Administration Team to build supportive operational systems for Firelight.
Shannon is the first member of Firelight who is based on the East Coast, outside of Washington, D.C. Shannon comes to Firelight from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, where she served as the Program Manager for the Africa and Eurasia Teams, managing program and work streams in 15 countries throughout eastern Europe and Africa. She has a MA in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of San Diego.
Shannon has been trained in psycho-social rehabilitative techniques for children with HIV in South Africa, and co-founded a small nonprofit for children in the Khayelitsha township outside of Cape Town. Previously, she has held positions with Catholic Charities Refugee Services – working with refugees from French-speaking countries and human trafficking victims, World Trade Center San Diego, and Catholic Relief Services.
Shannon is passionate about social justice and child protection, and in 2006 was the recipient of a Humanitarian Award from the state of Maryland for her work with Lebanese refugees in Baltimore during the Lebanon War.
